I decided to just list key tracks but that's about it...the more I thought about it, listing sample information explicitly seemed tacky. If you have questions about that, just email me.
I will say this much though...if there are records you are looking for that can be reasonably found through digging (for example, the titles you'll find below and others like it), I'm willing to accept want lists and if I find items within your price range, I'll pick 'em up for you. A great back-to-back fusion of Walk Tall with Mercy, Mercy, Mercy. Alpert, Herb: Rise 12" (A&M 1979) F+/VG++ Hypnotize Axelrod, David: Song of Innoncence (TTS-982) NM/NM Reissue of Axelrod's most infamous LP. Great condition. Ayers, Roy: Everybody Loves the Sunshine (Polydor 1976) VG-/VG+ Classic Ayers' LP with lots of smoothed out, mellow vibe grooves including the title track and other goodies like Third Eye Benson, George: Shape of Things to Come (A&M/CTI 1968) VG/VG++ Hard to find Benson LP on A&M that features some magnificent tracks: "Footin' It" and the laid-back "Face It Boy, It's Over". Bobo, Willie: Uno, Dos, Tres (Verve)VG+/VG+ Bobo, Willie: Uno, Dos, Tres (Verve)VG-/VG An outstanding Bobo album in the same vein as *Spanish Grease* and just as hard to find. Lots of great Afro-Latin jams, including the massively funky "Fried Neck Bones and Some Home Fries". Dennis Coffeey and the Detroit Guitar Band: Evolution (Sussex) VG/VG+ An outstanding classic that features Coffey's funk smash "Scorpio" and tracks like "Big City Funk" and "Sad Angel." Dennis Coffey and the Detroit Guitar Band: Electric Coffey (Sussex 1972) VG/VG An excellent, funky follow-up to Evolution, Electric Coffey rocks the breakbeats and razor guitar lines on tracks like "Son of Scorpio" and "Virgo's Song". Crusaders: 1 (Blue Thumb) VG+/NM- One of the harder-to-find Crusaders' LP on Blue Thumb (where they cut most of their best soul-jazz). This one has great cuts like "Mystique Blues". Detroit Emeralds: I'm In Love With You (Westbound 1973) VG/NM- Detroit Emeralds: I'm In Love With You (Westbound 1973) VG/NM- Detroit Emeralds: I'm In Love With You (Westbound 1973) VG/NM- Funky, funky break on You're Getting a Little Too Smart. Crazy '70s cover too, with all four Emeralds dressed down in some bad polyester green suits. A classic funky affair. Detroit Emeralds: You Want It, You Got It (Bellaphon) NM-/NM- A great Detroit soul album...fantastic vocals and sweet tracks. Features the ultra soulful "Baby Let Me Take You". Donaldson, Lou: Hot Dog (Blue Note BST 94318) VG--/VG+ A classic breakbeat LP from Donaldson. Way too funky with songs like "It's Your Thing", "Who's Making Love" and "Turtle Walk." Earth, Wind & Fire: Open Our Eyes (Columbia 1974) VG-/VG+ Cool Earth, Wind and Fire LP before they went REALLY pop. In other words, it's still funky enuff. El Chicano: Viva Tirado (Kapp 1970) VG/NM- Their first - and by some estimations - their best LP. A little young in terms of the maturation of their Chicano soul/funk fusion style, but great songs like the title cut, "Cantelope Island" and other jazz covers are filled with smooth organ vamps and Afro-Latin rhythmic flavor. Farrell, Joe: Upon This Rock (CTI 1973) VG++/NM- His most sought-after CTI LP, this features the title cut with its familiar breakbeat. Gillespie, Dizzy: Cornucopia (Solid State 1969) VG+/NM- Cool late '60s Gillespie LP with covers of "Windmills of Your Mind", "My Cherie Amour" and "Get Back." Hall, Daryl & John Oates: Private Eyes (sealed) (RCA) "Can't Go For That". Yeah, it's some '80s pop sh*t, but it still bumps like hell. Hammond, Johnny: Higher Ground (Kudu 16) Dope, classic Hammond LP full of breakbeats and funkalicious organ vamps. Includes the infamous "Big Sur Suite". The Harder They Come OST VG-/NM- A classic reggae masterpiece with tons of tight cuts from the likes of Jimmy Cliff, the Maytals and don't forget the most righteous "Shanty Town" by Desmond Dekker. Harris, Eddie: Live at Newport (Atlantic 1971) VG+/NM- Strong live album by Harris in the middle of his storied Atlantic career. Features a cool break and horn melody on "Carry On Brother". Hawes, Hampton: Northern Windows (Fantasy 1974) NM/NM Hawes, Hampton: Northern Windows (Fantasy 1974) NM/NM Hawes, Hampton: Northern Windows (Fantasy 1974) NM-/NM A very funky, jazzy affair, produced by David Axelrod. Features "Web", a monster funk jam. Hayes, Issac: ...To Be Continued (Enterprise) VG-/NM- Hayes, Issac: ...To Be Continued (Enterprise) VG-/NM- Perhaps even funkier than "Hot Buttered Soul". This is chock-full of great cuts like Hayes' cover of "Look of Love" and the unforgettable piano loop on "Ike's Mood". Hayes, Issac: Don't Let Go (Polydor 1979) VG+/NM- A lot more pop than previous LPs (look at the year), but "A Few More Kisses to Go" is the bomb. Higgins, Monk: Heavyweight (UA 1972) VG+/NM- Drum breaks galore on this one, plus dope basslines. The best Higgins' LP out there for hunters of breakbeats (sampled and those yet to be). Hard to find. Hubbard, Freddie: Sky Dive (CTI 1972) VG+/NM- Hard-to-find Hubbard album from his CTI years. Features the hot-boppin' "Skydive" and the massive funk joint "Povo". Hubbard, Freddie: Polar AC (CTI 1975) VG-/VG++ Another quality Hubbard/CTI effort. This one has a funky cover of "People Make the World Go Round" and the soulful "Son of Skydive." Humphrey, Bobbi: Blacks and Blues (Blue Note 1974) VG-/VG++ Humphrey, Bobbi: Blacks and Blues (Blue Note 1974) VG-/NM- Humphrey's most sought-after LP, features the smooth title track among others. Also has "Harlem River Drive" and "Jasper Country Man" Jackson 5: Maybe Tomorrow (Motown 1971) VG+/NM A classic Jackson 5 LP, features "It's Good To Be Here" and the title cut. Jamal, Ahmad: Heat Wave (Cadet 1966) F+/VG Nice, straight ahead jazz piano album from Jamal with covers of "April in Paris" and "Misty." Jamal, Ahmad: Ahmad Jamal '73 (20th Century 1973) VG/NM- Jamal, Ahmad: Ahmad Jamal '73 (20th Century 1973) VG/NM- Jamal's reputation is mostly with the conventional piano, but his electronic keys work has been slept-on on albums such as this one and "Genetic Walk." This LP has great, soul/jazz/funky songs on on tracks like "The World is a Ghetto" and "Children of the Night". Jamal, Ahmad: Genetic Walk (20th Century Records 1974) VG+/VG++ Looks kind of cheap, but actually has some gems, including the title track which has a funky ass break about a minute in plus nice keyboard work by Jamal. James, Bob: One (CTI 1974) NM/NM James, Bob: One (CTI 1974) NM/NM A classic James (and CTI) soul/jazz LP. This features the much-sampled "Nautilus" plus "Feel Like Making Love". James, Bob: Two (CTI 1975) NM/NM James, Bob: Two (CTI 1975) VG/NM- James, Bob: Two (CTI 1975) VG/VG+ Two words: "Mardi Gras." Keem-O-Sabe: Electric Indian (UAS 6728) SEALED Keem-O-Sabe: Electric Indian (UAS 6728) VG++/NM- Keem-O-Sabe: Electric Indian (UAS 6728) P/VG A very quirky, but funky instrumental album from the late '60s. The whole "Indian" motif is carried out pretty stereotypically, but the instrumentals are groovy and funky despite. Great songs include their covers of "Spinning Wheel", "My Cherie Amolur" and the title cut, "Keem-O-Sabe." Off-beat and likable. Klemmer, John: Eruptions (Cadet 1970) VG/VG+ Features "Gardens of Uranus" among other spaced-out soul-jazz joints. Klemmer, John: Blowin' Gold (double LP compilation) (Chess 1982)VG/NM- Not to be confused with his first album by the same name, this is actually a double LP compilation with a "best of" set of songs taken from Klemmer's Chess years. Includes the beautiful "Free Soul" and stealthy "Gardens of Uranus". Knight, Gladys and the Pips: I Feel a Song (Buddah 1974) VG-/VG+ "Everybody's talkin' 'bout the good old days" and "what comes around goes back around again". Knight, Gladys and the Pips: Neither One of Us (Motown 1973) VG+/NM- Knight, Gladys and the Pips: Neither One of Us (Motown 1973) VG+/NM- Knight, Gladys and the Pips: Neither One of Us (Motown 1973) VG+/NM- A funky drum break and bassline on "Who Is She (And What Is She To You)". The Landlord OST (Al Kooper)VG-/NM- Great, highly sought after soundtrack by Al Kooper with lots of tight, funky drum breaks and quirky cuts. Includes "Soul Hoedown", "The Landlord" and tracks by the Staple Singers including "Brand New Day". Last Poets, The: Douglas 3 (Pip)F+/NM- Their classic spoken-word piece - source of MANY a vocal snippet including "party and bullsh*t", "n*ggers are scared of revolution" and "I hear time is running out." A masterpiece of black power politics. Lewis, Ramsey: Mother Nature's Son (Cadet 1968) VG+/VG+ Lewis, Ramsey: Mother Nature's Son (Cadet 1968) VG+/VG+ Luscious sounding Lewis album that features him on both conventional and electronic piano. Features a sweeping and sonorous melody on "Julia" and funky electronic work on "Cry Baby Cry". Lewis, Ramsey: Them Changes (Cadet 18643)NM-/NM Lewis, Ramsey: Them Changes (Cadet 18643)NM-/NM- Raucous cover of Buddy Miles' song. Lots of hot, stomping electronic piano on this one...really funky stuff. Lewis, Ramsey: Solar Wind (Columbia 1974) VG/NM- Lewis, Ramsey: Solar Wind (Columbia 1974) VG/NM- Very much slept on Lewis LP from the mid-70s (around the same time as "Sun Goddess") with a funky drum break on "Summer Breeze" and "Jamaican Marketplace." Very groovy album filled with the sounds of Lewis' electric piano work. Lewis, Ramsey: Back to the Roots (Cadet) VG/NM- Hot cover of "Back to the USSR" with monster drum break. Lots of great bass and piano combos - it's all acoustic, but the low end on this LP is amazing. Lewis, Ramsey: Funky Serenity (CBS 1973) VG/NM- Just as the name suggests...serene and funky. Includes "My Love For You" and "If Loving You Is Wrong." Lewis, Ramsey: Upendo Ni Pamoja (CBS 1973) VG+/NM- Lewis, Ramsey: Upendo Ni Pamoja (CBS 1973) VG+/NM- Really great album by Lewis with lots of electronic piano work. Fantastic covers of "Slippin Into Darkess", "People Make the World Go Around" and the sizzling "Collage." Little Feat: Dixie Chicken (Warner Bros. 1973) VG/VG++ Little Feat: Dixie Chicken (Warner Bros. 1973) VG/VG++ Classic drum break. Ya gotta put it on so it can kill you softly (sorry, couldn't help the pun!). The Loading Zone: S/T (RCA Victor LSP 3959) F-/NM- Obscure jazz album put together by Linda Tillery and others. Features "Can I Dedicate." The Lost Man OST (Universal 73060) Produced by Quincy Jones, this is dope '70s soundtrack, laden with a lot of funky interludes like "Main Squeeze", "Sweet Soul Sister" and "Up Against the Wall." Mandrill: Just Outside of Town (Polydor 1973) VG-/VG+ Mandrill: Just Outside of Town (Polydor 1973) VG+/VG+ One of the definitive Mandrill albums for certain, up to the gills with funky Latin soul combinations including the chunky Mango Meat and Fat City Strut. McCartney, Paul: McCartney (Stao 3363) VG/NM- Paul McCartney funky? If you don't believe it, you haven't heard "Momma Miss America" yet. Massive drum break and organ melody. Moody, James: The Teachers (Perception 1970) VG++/VG++ Sleeper Moody LP that has a dope bassline and breakbeat on "The Teachers". Morgan, Lee: Live at the Lighthouse (Blue Note 1970) VG-/VG+ A monster double LP from Morgan featuring "Absolutions." Muhammad, Idris: Turn This Mutha Out (Kudu 1977) VG-/NM- Muhammad, Idris: Turn This Mutha Out (Kudu 1977) VG/VG++ Muhammad, Idris: Turn This Mutha Out (Kudu 1977) VG+/VG++ You can't front on the funky "Crab Apples" (Grand Puba, Jeru, Run DMC) or "Say What" (The Coup). This is a great one to throw down at the clubs. New Birth, The: Birth Day (RCA 1972)VG-/VG+ New Birth, The: Birth Day (RCA 1972)VG-/VG+ Likable, funky album from New Birth. Infamous source of both Jeru's "Ya Playin Yourself" and Junior Mafia's "Player's Anthem" ("You Are What I'm All About" plus "Gotta Get A Knutt" - sampled twice by De La Soul. Nite-Liters: Instrumental Directions (RCA 1972) SEALED Outstanding funk album by the Nite-Liters with tracks like "Afro Strut", "Wichita Lineman" and "Bakers Instnat." Another Nite-Liters classic. O'Jays, The: Survival (CBS 1975) NM-/NM "Got To Give the People What They Want" - rockin', funky drum break and bassline used by many, prominently EPMD. Odetta: Odetta Sings (Polydor) VG/NM- A surprising find, this one has a massive drum break (complete with bottomed-out basslines). Partridge Family, The: The Partridge Family Album (Bell) NM/NM "baa ba baa baa, ba ba ba ba baa...Nice N' Smooth is funky, also hip hop junkies..." Pickett, Wilson: The Best of Wilson Pickett (Atlantic 1967) VG-/VG+ Ray, Goodman & Brown: S/T (Polydor 1979) NM-/NM Despite the late '70s date, this has a beaut of a song, "Another Day." Rotary Connection: S/T (Cadet Concept) VG/NM- Nice bit of rock fusion work, featuring "Memory Band" and its familiar guitar lick. Very unconventional rock and a great listen throughout. Gil Scott-Heron/Brian Jacksoni: Winter in America (Strata-East 1974) G+/VG Gil Scott-Heron/Brian Jacksoni: Winter in America (Strata-East 1974) VG-/NM- My favorite Gil Scott-Heron album...such great soul on this one, with a Strata-East jazz touch. Features the classic, "The Bottle", plus "Winter in America" and "Peace Go With You, Brother." Smith, Lonnie Liston: Visions Of a New World VG+/NM- Smith, Lonnie Liston: Visions Of a New World VG-/NM- Features "Devika" and other great examples of Smith's soul-jazz expositions. Summer, Donna: Love to Love You Baby (Casablance 1975) NM-/NM The first 12" to really inauguarate the format...some claim this disk ushered in disco and killed off funk. Others say it's the beginning of sampled loops...either way, it's a club classic. Supremes, The: New Ways But Love Stays (Motown 1970) VG+/NM- Supremes, The: New Ways But Love Stays (Motown 1970) VG+/NM- "It's Time to Breakdown". Tjader, Cal: Cal Tjader Plugs In (Skye 1969) NM/NM Tjader, Cal: Cal Tjader Plugs In (Skye 1969) VG/VG+ A great Tjader LP...very soulful and jazzy. Features "Morning Mist" and "Lady Madonna". Tjader, Cal: Tjader-Ade (Buddah 1970) VG/NM- A curious compilation of three Tjader LPs, including the best songs from "Cal Tjader Plugs In" and "Solar Heat" plus "Tjader Plays Burt Bacharach." Washington Jr., Grover: Feels So Good (Kudu 1975) Washington Jr., Grover: Feels So Good (Kudu 1975) Washington Jr., Grover: Feels So Good (Kudu 1975) Washington Jr., Grover: Feels So Good (Kudu 1975) This has both "Hydra" and "Knucklehead". Classic Kudu grooves. Washington Jr., Grover: Mister Magic (Kudu 1974) VG/NM- Washington Jr., Grover: Mister Magic (Kudu 1974) VG/NM- Another great Washington LP from his Kudu years. Cool sh*t on both the title cut and "Black Frost". Withers, Bill: Still Bill (Sussex 1972) VG/NM- Probably his best LP, featuring "Kissing My Love", "Use Me", "Lean on Me" and "Who Is He." Young-Holt Unlimited: Soulful Strut (BL 764144) VG-/VG One of the most memorable jazz-funk songs ever made, "Soulful Strut" was actually the instrumental version of Barbara Acklin's "Am I the Same Girl" but no one remembers Acklin's original and everyone remembrs Young-Holt Unlimited. Other cool tracks too like "Funky Is as Funky Does.
